Jürgen Klinsmann has a great opportunity to really evaluate George John, Omar Gonzalez, Kofi Sarkodie, Freddy Adu, Benny Feilhaber, Eddie Johnson, and Juan Agudelo in the January camp. An argument can be made that all eight of those players could possibly start for a full-strength United States Men’s National Team, so it is quite alarming that many of those players might not even be called into camp by Jürgen Klinsmann.
While it is unlikely that George John and Omar Gonzalez would start at the same time for a full-strength United States Men’s National Team because of Geoff Cameron, Klinsmann should have already tested out these two center backs more, and he should have tested out how playing Benny Feilhaber or Freddy Adu or both with quality strikers would improve the United States Men’s National Team’s attack.
Going into 2013, Jürgen Klinsmann should know that his roster needs several players to fill the available starting spots not occupied by Tim Howard, Geoff Cameron, Fabian Johnson, Michael Bradley, and Clint Dempsey. This leaves five open starting spots and 12 more roster spots. Terrence Boyd, Juan Agudelo, Herculez Gomez, and Eddie Johnson have already demonstrated that they can be effective at the international level, so if Klinsmann were paying attention, then he would already have those four players in mind as his strikers for World Cup qualifying.
Juan Agudelo, Terrence Boyd, and Eddie Johnson performed well in international play, so Klinsmann should use the January camp to see how those strikers play when players like Freddy Adu, Benny Feilhaber, and Mix Diskerud are playing behind the strikers. With Joe Corona presumably not available for the January camp due to the Mexican Clausura, Klinsmann has the opportunity to test out the other three playmakers mentioned above, who could all theoretically be on the roster with Joe Corona for World Cup qualifiers. Klinsmann needs to see how the playmakers mentioned above can help to play better final balls for Terrence Boyd, Juan Agudelo, and Eddie Johnson.
Klinsmann would be wise to use the January camp as primarily an opportunity to see which players he can incorporate into the full-strength squad for the United States Men’s National Team, and this means Klinsmann needs to test out attacking midfielders and center backs. The coach of the United States appears to rate Graham Zusi over Joe Corona, Benny Feilhaber, Mix Diskerud, and Freddy Adu, which is alarming and shocking for a former striker of Klinsmann’s ability. All four or the other playmakers are noticeably more skilled than Zusi.
It remains a mystery why one of the all-time leaders in World Cup goals would not make any attempts to use players that can provide better service for the United States’ strikers.
Based on Jürgen Klinsmann’s track record, do not be surprised if the most talented players in Major League Soccer (many of whom are already proven internationally) do not receive a call-up to the January camp, while less-talented players like Kyle Beckerman receive a call up and rave reviews from Jürgen Klinsmann.
For Jürgen Klinsmann, the players with the most technical ability and the most advanced playing-style seem to have no value.
